Grounds Laborer – Landscaping & Maintenance

About the role

The Grounds Laborer will support a US Navy program on Diego Garcia, performing routine landscaping and grounds‑maintenance tasks to keep operational areas, storm‑water drainage systems and landscaped spaces neat, functional and compliant with standards.

Key responsibilities

• Perform routine grounds maintenance such as mowing, trimming, edging, pruning, mulching, weeding, raking, planting, fertilising and watering.
• Maintain and clean storm‑water drainage systems, removing debris and blockages.
• Operate and service grounds‑keeping equipment including lawn mowers, weed trimmers, brush cutters, blowers and related tools.
• Collect and dispose of leaves, grass clippings, trash and other debris from grounds, parking lots and walkways.
• Install, water, fertilise, prune and protect plants, trees and shrubs as directed.
• Maintain artificial turf by removing vegetation, cleaning spills and removing bird droppings.
• Assist with irrigation‑system repairs and adjustments to ensure proper water distribution.
• Report maintenance issues, equipment malfunctions or unsafe conditions to the crew leader.
• Support storm‑cleanup and drainage maintenance during inclement weather.
• Assist with seasonal or special projects and other duties as assigned.

Required profile

• Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
• Ability to follow safety protocols, use personal protective equipment and report hazards.
• Team‑oriented attitude and ability to follow instructions from supervisors.
• Physical capability to perform manual labour and operate powered equipment.
