Civil Engineer / Technologist

About the role

This position is responsible for the technical design of civil engineering projects within the section. The role supports Professional Engineers and contributes to both design and construction phases while mentoring junior staff.

Key responsibilities

• Supervise and manage small teams of technicians, students, draughtsmen and graduates.
• Mentor team members in the use of relevant software tools.
• Check and review the work of other team members to ensure quality.
• Develop design solutions, draft technical reports and present findings.
• Prepare tenders, Bills of Quantities and specifications for construction projects.
• Assist in bid preparation and cost estimating.
• Inspect constructed works for compliance with design and specifications.
• Compile contract documentation, client invoicing and project auditing where required.
• Support project financial forecasting, budgeting and resource planning.
• Apply SMEC’s systems and procedures and ensure their enforcement.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Technology (or higher) from an accredited university.
• Minimum 3 years of practical experience in designing transportation, municipal services, bulk water or sewerage infrastructure.
• Understanding of local functional business technologies and markets.
• Basic knowledge of commercial aspects of project management.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Autodesk Civil 3D.
• Working knowledge of InfraWorks, storm and sewer analysis tools, iDAS and water design software.
• Experience with BIM systems.
• Familiarity with project management software.
• Ability to produce technical reports and presentations.
