Switchboard Operator

About the role

The Switchboard Operator will support a US Navy program on Diego Garcia by managing the telephone switchboard and ensuring all calls are handled efficiently and professionally. This role requires delivering exceptional customer service while maintaining accurate call routing and handling sensitive information with discretion.

Key responsibilities

• Operate and manage the telephone switchboard to answer, screen, and direct incoming, outgoing, and inter‑office calls.
• Resolve or route inquiries promptly to the appropriate department or personnel.
• Log and track calls as needed and provide status updates.
• Assist with emergency communications and prioritize urgent calls according to escalation protocols.
• Update and maintain the directory database to ensure accurate call routing.
• Handle confidential information securely and professionally.
• Follow operational procedures for equipment use, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
• Manage high call volumes while maintaining accuracy and professionalism.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• 1–3 years of experience operating a telephone switchboard or in a customer‑service role.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Strong problem‑solving and multitasking abilities.
• Ability to remain calm and professional under pressure.
• Valid passport with at least one year of validity and ability to obtain required visas.
